Cruise Tips and Tricks

You picked a cruise, got to port safely and now you are onboard waiting for the boat to leave the shore. It’s time to eat, drink, and make merry. The below tips will help make your trip flawless without breaking the bank.

Deck Out Your Cabin

You decided to save money on the room and chose an interior stateroom. An interior room, while small, can be made into a relaxing retreat for your vacation. The walls in cruise ships are almost always metal, so bring some magnetic hooks to help with storage and organization. If you are a feeling a little more whimsical, pack a small dry erase board and markers. This can be used to as a daily wall planner or put it on the outside of the room to leave messages for friends and family that may have traveled with you. There will usually be just a few outlets in each room, so bring portable power adapter or wireless battery that you can charge each day and can be carried with you.  This can be especially helpful when you go ashore, so you don’t have to search for an outlet in a restaurant or bar. Always download the cruise line’s app. It can be used while in airplane mode and can communicate with anyone else who has it as well as a providing a calendar of each day’s events or deals.

Feeling Queasy?

If you feel nervous about getting seasick or hit a rough patch of ocean on your voyage these tips will put you at ease. Green apples and crackers can help soothe your stomach and are available free of charge. Most cruise lines offer complementary room service so you can even have it delivered right to you. Any nausea drugs such as Dramamine can be purchased at one of the shops onboard if you feel you need something stronger.

Class Up Your First Night

Try to eat at one of the specialty restaurants the first night of the voyage. People will usually want to eat in the dining room the first night and the restaurants will offer deals to get people in that first night. Its not uncommon to receive a complementary bottle of wine or a discount on that first night. If you are leaving from a Texas port, you will have to wait until the ship gets out of national waters for any drink package you purchased to start, so this can be a cheap way of getting a buzz the first night of your trip.

Food, Food, and More Food!

So much food is included with your ticket, and you can eat as little or as much as you want. You can order as many entrees as you want at the dining room, and usually the waiter will give you a cover if you want to take any leftovers back to your cabin. This can be a nice way to avoid the lines at the buffet and take some classy leftovers for later. Some late-night chocolate lava cake can be especially delicious or a cheese and fruit plate for after a show or dancing the night away at the club. Cruise lines are all about giving you the best service, so let your server know of any dietary restrictions and they can almost always provide you with something delicious that fits your diet.

Booze Cruise for Cheap

Ready to get your drink on, but have sticker shock when you go to one of the cruise bars? Don’t panic. If you want to have more than 3 drinks per day, looking into purchasing a drink package from the cruise line can be a good way to save money overall. If you purchase the drink package when you book, you can usually save as much as 10%. However, those packages may not offer everything you want or not include top shelf options. In that case, liquor tastings at the liquor shops, complimentary champagne at any art auctions or The Captain’s Night and tasting events or competitions can be a great way to get free or discounted booze.

Staying Fit on Vacation

Having delicious food around you everyday can make it easy to pack on a few pounds. Not to worry! Cruise ships usually have at least ten floors, so taking the stairs everywhere can work off that extra piece of cake or late-night pizza. Also, the gym is included at no extra cost, so you won’t have any trouble maintaining any workout regimen you had before your trip. If being outside is more your thing, most ships will have a track that takes you around the outside of the boat.

Internet

These days we are all are glued to our phones and checking social media. If you can’t go a few days without Instagram or Twitter, look into the Wi-Fi packages that the cruise line offers. However, if you can unplug a few days at a time, once you get into port you will have cell service and have full access to your data without paying the cruise line. Make sure your phone company does not charge extra for international calls or texting should you be out the U.S.

The most important thing is to just have fun! A cruise should be relaxing and hassle free, so book that massage while in port, sip on a glass of champagne at the Captain’s Toast night and enjoy your vacation on the high seas.

Fredericksburg Top 5 Weekend Getaway Activities

The Texas Hill Country is vast and is filled with Sate Parks, wineries, natural pools, and spots tailored made for romantic weekend getaways. This list is a just a few of my favorite destinations in Fredericksburg. Also check out this San Antonio getaway bucket list if you are looking for a more city-centric experience that also features some great outdoor activities.

This old German town located west of Austin is known for its rich history, German food, and one of the hottest spots in Central Texas for wineries and wine tours.

The 290 Wine Trail

The highway leading into Fredericksburg is dotted with wineries and vineyards, making Fredericksburg a one stop destination for Texas wine and wine lovers from all around the world. You can find wine tours or just explore on your own (designated driver recommended after the second or third tasting).

Grape Creek Vineyards, the oldest winery on the Hwy 290 wine trail, Grape Creek’s grounds offer not only fabulous wines, but also a restaurant and sprawling patio to enjoy the Texas sun and glass or bottle of wine with friends and family. You can also take a tour of the vineyards, production facility and an exclusive tasting straight from the barrels. First on my bucket list is to visit the newly opened sister winery Heath Sparkling Wines which is the first winery in Texas to only feature sparkling wine.

Mendelbaum Cellars located on the just outside of Fredericksburg features wines made from grapes harvested in Israel as well as olive oil. Truly a unique experience, visiting Mendelbaum is a great way to learn about the different regions where the grapes are grown. They also have wine with Texas grown grapes and comparing the different varietals is a fun experience for any wine lover.

National Museum of The Pacific War

Located in the heart of downtown Fredericksburg, the museum was started to honor Admiral Nimitz, a native of Fredericksburg and military leader during WWII. The complex spans six acres and includes memorials to the fallen, a Japanese Garden, and artifacts and documents on the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during WWII. The National Museum of the Pacific War is a must-see spot for any burgeoning historian.

Guten Tag foodies!

No trip to Fredericksburg is complete without tasting the authentic German food the town is known for.

Old German Bakery and Restaurant, one of my favorite spots is not to be missed. Established in 1975, the bakery is known for its scratch made delicacies and using traditional German recipes. Every time I go, I try something new and am never disappointed.

Alstadt Brewery-serving traditionally made German-style beers is a must-do for that friend or family number who can talk for hours about hops and yeast ratios and will only drink beer on tap. Alstadt imports their ingredients from Germany and only uses hops, barley, yeast, and spring water to make their brews.

The Auslander located on Main Street is a perfect spot for a cold brew and some Jagerschnitzel sitting in their biergarten. A Fredericksburg favorite for over twenty years, The Auslander is the destination for Bavarian cuisine.

Shopping on Main Street

Fredericksburg’s Main Street shopping area only has businesses owned and operated by residents of the city, so you are sure to find one of kind items wherever you shop. Whether you are looking for vintage clothing, handmade gifts, or local art, you need venture nu further then the National Historic District. There are also cafes and wine tasting rooms, when you need a break from the Texas heat. A particular favorite of mine is Clear River Ice Cream and Deli. All their ice cream is handmade in small batches so the menu changes often which means more return trips to taste their newest flavors.

Wildflowers in the Texas Hill Country

Central Texas has some of the best spots to see wildflowers. An iconic family photo in a field of Bluebonnets is essential for any Springtime trip. A few of my favorite places to take in the wildflowers near Fredericksburg are Wild Seed Farms and Becker Vineyards.

Wild Seed Farms

Wild Seed Farms has over 200 acres of cultivated wildflower fields at their headquarters in Fredericksburg. Tourists can see the flowers from March to October and purchase local varieties at the nursey onsite or enjoy refreshments in the biergarten.

Becker Vineyards located just outside of Fredericksburg is one of the most famous Central Texas vineyards. Becker wine has been served at the White House and the Texas Governor’s Mansion. The founders of Becker Vineyards saw fields of lavender on a trip to France to learn more about Viognier grapes. Back at their Hill Country vineyard, they planted lavender, poppies, sunflowers, and blue bonnets. This is a favorite spot to bring the family because the photo opportunities are stunning and sipping a chilled glass of Becker Viognier is the perfect past time for a Spring day in Texas
